75 Years in Business

Mitton are proud to announce that 2005 marks the 75th anniversary of the company. We have come a long way since the business was established by Herbert Mitton in 1930 and can boast continuous trading in all but the “war years” ever since, and we confident that we have got a bright future in front of us.

Few companies reach this important anniversary and it is a credit to our staff and clients that we have reached this special milestone. There have been many chapters in the story of Mitton along the way each of which is proof of the continued commitment of the company to excel in the mechanical contracting arena. In the mid 1950’s Harry Hoyle bought the company and 1958 saw the business become Limited which was the first real turning point as the customer base began to change from domestic to commercial. Since then the whole ethos of the business has been geared towards developing our commercial client base.

Harry retired in the early 80’s with his son Peter taking over the running of the business. Some three years later Michael Taylor joined the business and the modern day growth of the company began. The first year with Peter at the helm saw the turnover reach £1 million for the first time, double the previous years return.

The eighties also saw Mitton become one of the first mechanical contractors in the country, and the first in West Yorkshire to become ISO registered. This has enabled us to maintain and improve our levels of quality for contracting and has recently seen the company receiving accreditation for both design and installation.1998 was another landmark year for Mitton with a £10 million turnover being achieved. Following on from this Peter was then elected president of the HVCA and decided it was his time to “retire” which led to the management buyout of the company led by Michael Taylor.
