Mitton Industrial Case Studies
Fort Vale Engineering
Fort Vale Engineering is one of the UK’s most respected manufacturing companies, serving a worldwide market producing safety valves, discharge valves, manways and ancillaries for the safe transport, storage and process of hazardous liquids, food stuffs, gases and powders.
Mitton worked closely with Fort Vale for more than two years as the company contemplated a planned move from its previous manufacturing and production facilities to a new site all under one roof in Accrington, just a short distance from the old Head Office at Nelson in Lancashire.
Work carried out at the new site was extensive and challenging, involving all necessary heating, ventilation and water services as well as piped manufacturing services including compressed air, and welding gases.
The project was completed and on line at the end of 2006.
Hall Fire Protection Ltd
Mitton has worked with Hall Fire Protection Ltd – one of the UK’s leading independent fire protection companies - on a wide range of contracts over the years. When the company acquired new premises and moved its operational base at Swinton in Manchester, Mitton was awarded the contract to supply, install and commission all mechanical services installations for the new offices.
This work involved the supply and installation of LPHW heating systems, supply and extract ventilation, domestic water services, comfort cooling to office areas, gas fired radiant heating and gas supplies to the production area and above ground drainage.
Holme Mills, Marsden, Huddersfield
This was the first project carried out by Mitton on behalf of Havercroft Construction Ltd of Brigg, Lincolnshire.
The contract called for the design, supply, installation, test and commissioning of a domestic hot and cold water system, with low pressure hot water heating to office areas, mechanical ventilation including toilet extract, sanitary ware and above ground drainage as well as a warm air LPG fuelled heating system to the warehouse area.
The work was carried out for Lila Hurst Limited, part of the James Holdsworth Group, who operate from Holme Mills to supply the complete range of foundations necessary for flexible card clothing.
Lighting Control System, Warehousing Complex
At an 18 year old warehouse, Mitton was commissioned to carry out a detailed survey to report on potential reductions in consumed energy. The site had a high base load with minimal fluctuation, demonstrating a slight peak through the working day, dropping slightly at weekends.
The Mitton Environmental team identified a significant dip in base load corresponding to public holidays when the warehouse was closed and the internal lighting system was turned off.
Although a rudimentary lighting control system was installed in the main warehouse, this had a manual override. Tests and evaluations indicated that lighting could be reduced down by at least a third and probably two thirds, with the installation of lighting control to all areas lit by high pressure sodium lighting offered significant potential savings.
At peak daylight availability, this equated to a saving of 30% of building energy consumption.
Mitton recommended a three-way route to the client:
- The ‘free win’ approach, with staff educated to switch off lights when not required
- The maintenance/low cost approach of changing existing light fittings for modern HF light fittings and implementing a system of roof light cleaning
- Installation of a full lighting control system
The client opted for the full lighting control system. This was carried out at a total cost of £18,000, and full payback was achieved in less than six months.
Reopening the Food Lines
When Woodhead Brothers purchased a previously decommissioned abattoir at Spalding in Lincolnshire. Mitton was commissioned to provide and install all the necessary mechanical services installations to bring the abattoir back into a fully working production plant. In addition, the building was being further developed and increased in size to cope with additional capacity for the slaughter of both cattle and pigs.
Mitton designed and installed the following services into the slaughterhouse, to meet all current regulations and legislation.
- Steam and condensate
- Gas supplies
- Hot water at 60oC for hand washing
- Hot water at 90oC for sterilisation processes
- Cold water installations
- Hot water at 60oC at 14 bar for washdown processes
- Supply and extract ventilation installations
- Sanitaryware and above ground drainage
- Compressed air installation
- Steam raising boiler plant and associated plant and equipment
- All services to new staff canteen
All services generally run at high level within the building, connecting at low level to new equipment being provided by specialist companies from all over Europe.
